The Council of Mosques – Tower Hamlets (CoM-TH), in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council, organised a special seminar and luncheon for Imams at the London Muslim Centre, 19 July 2025
The half day seminart brought together Imams, Muezzins and mosque committee representatives from across the borough to share knowledge, discuss key religious and community issues, and strengthen collaboration between mosques and local services.
The seminar was chaired by Maulana Shamsul Hoque, Chairman of CoM-TH, and conducted by Secretary General Sirajul Islam Hira. The programme began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Maulana Rezaul Islam of Ford Square Mosque.
Representatives from the Tower Hamlets Children’s and Social Care Department, including Isobel Wickhampresented information highlighting available family and safeguarding services.
The second part of the discussion focused on standardising prayer and Ramadan timetables, particularly the timing for Suhoor and Iftar, to prevent confusion within the Muslim community. Participants agreed on the need for clarity and unity on this matter.
Prominent local scholars and Imams addressing the seminar included:
- Shaykh Abdul Qayum(East London Mosque)
- Maulana Abul Hasanat Chowdhury(Darul Ummah Masjid)
- Maulana Tajul Islam(Stepney Shahjalal Masjid)
Throughout the session, speakers emphasised the value of training for Imams, equipping them with both religious and social understanding to better support their congregations. Participants shared practical recommendations on improving community engagement, youth outreach and public communication.
The seminar concluded with a renewed commitment to ongoing professional development and inter-mosque cooperation — ensuring that Imams continue to play a central role in fostering harmony, education and wellbeing across Tower Hamlets.
